INFANT SWIM RESOURCE:
THE SCIENCE BEHIND ISR AND WHY IT WORKS

WHAT IS ISR?

With over 55 years of continuous refinement, ISR stands as the pinnacle of aquatic survival instruction for infants and children. Our mission is to transform your child into an "aquatic problem solver," equipped with the ability to self-rescue in any water depth. ISR skills significantly enhance your child's likelihood of surviving an aquatic emergency, even while fully clothed.

WHAT IS THE RETENTION RATE WITH ISR LESSONS?

HOW DOES MY CHILD KNOW TO HOLD THEIR BREATH?

In our very first lesson, we introduce breath-holding skills, laying the foundation for safe and confident swimming. Using powerful positive reinforcement techniques, we shape breath control, ensuring steady progress. Throughout each subsequent lesson, we consistently reinforce these essential breath-holding techniques, guiding your child towards mastery and confidence in the water.

ISR boasts an impressive retention rate of 94-100% up to one year post-lessons. However, it's important to note that children may inadvertently develop bad habits from observing others or engaging in certain activities, like floating in a bathtub or playing on pool steps. As your child progresses through lessons, open communication with your Instructor is key to identifying potential interferences with their learned Self-Rescue skills. Promptly contacting or returning to your instructor is crucial for preserving effective habits and ensuring your child's continued safety in the water.

WHY DO YOU HAVE KIDS SWIM IN CLOTHES?

Understanding that 86% of water-related incidents involve fully clothed children, we prioritize preparing our students for such scenarios. Experiencing immersion in clothing prior to an emergency helps children remain calm and focused, enhancing their ability to respond effectively. Those who have felt the weight and sensation of clothing in water are better equipped to handle unexpected situations. If you've ever jumped into water fully clothed, you're aware of the significant difference in weight and feel compared to wearing a bathing suit.

UNLOCKING FAQ'S FOR CHILD SWIM LESSONS

HOW LONG ARE ISR LESSONS?

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED FOR LESSONS?

Our program sessions span four to six weeks, offering daily 10-minute pool sessions from Monday to Friday.

HOW MIGHT MY CHILD REACT IF NEVER BEEN INTRODUCE TO SWIMMING?

During initial lessons, children may fuss due to the unfamiliar environment and new faces. However, as they grow more confident in the water, this fussing typically diminishes. This adjustment period is akin to trying a new exercise class or tackling a novel task at work—initial challenges give way to familiarity and proficiency with practice. Similarly, your child is mastering a skill they've never attempted before, navigating the learning curve with each session.

WHY DON'T PARENTS PARTICIPATE IN LESSONS?

Ensuring children do not solely link water with parental love and affection during initial lessons is critical. Teaching them to respond effectively to aquatic emergencies demands intense focus and objectivity. Research indicates that parents often struggle to maintain objectivity, hindering their effectiveness as instructors in the water. Consequently, parents are introduced into the water towards the session's end, where they learn to enjoy the water alongside their child's newfound skills.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOES AN ISR INSTRUCTOR HAVE?

Each Certified Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) Instructor completes an empowering 8-week intensive training and certification program, combining academic learning with hands-on experience in the water. With a minimum of 80 hours spent under the guidance of a Certified Master Instructor, our instructors receive thorough preparation. Furthermore, they all maintain current CPR and First Aid certification, ensuring the highest safety standards. Additionally, ISR Instructors undergo annual recertification, staying at the forefront of their field. Recognized as skilled aquatic behavior specialists, they possess a profound understanding of children's cognitive and physical development. This enables them to employ ISR's proprietary technique with expertise, responding effectively to children's needs in the water with confidence and positivity.

For each lesson, it's essential for every child to have three towels on hand. Additionally, for children who haven't completed potty training for six months or longer, it's mandatory to wear two layers of non-disposable swim diapers during each session. These measures ensure a comfortable and hygienic experience for everyone involved.

WHY ARE LESSONS EVERY DAY FOR 10 MINUTES?

This approach is grounded in several key considerations. Firstly, repetition and consistency form the bedrock of young children's learning, with research demonstrating that shorter, more frequent lessons lead to greater retention. Secondly, recognizing children's limited attention spans, it's vital to seize upon optimal learning opportunities. Thirdly, even though pool temperatures range from 78-88 degrees, they remain cooler than a child's body temperature. Consequently, during lessons, there's a potential for body heat loss due to physical exertion. Instructors diligently monitor students for signs of temperature fatigue, a common indicator of physical fatigue.

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS NON-VERBAL?

Aquatic accidents are not exclusive to anyone. It's important to recognize that children typically master physical milestones like sitting, crawling, and walking before they develop verbal skills. At ISR, we utilize sensorimotor learning, meaning verbal communication isn't a prerequisite for acquiring Self-Rescue skills. Through tactile guidance and positive reinforcement, we effectively communicate with our students, ensuring they feel supported and empowered throughout their journey toward aquatic safety and proficiency.
